National data transfer
Public Health England (PHE) contracted L2S2 to set up a network to collect emergency admissions data from hospitals to monitor disease rates and provide early detection of new infectious diseases.
L2S2 set up servers in hospitals throughout England and Northern Ireland and installed the Xenplate data collector on them. We set up a network on the NHS N3 private network to manage the system and transfer the data to PHE.
The data collectors were interfaced to different hospital IT systems with diverse and non-compatible datasets. They collect emergency admissions data from the hospital systems every day.
Once received, Xenplate automatically removes personal information from the data, meeting privacy rules, and normalises the data. It is then transferred to Public Health England.
Since the beginning of 2012, millions of data points have become more than 200 state of the nation reports.
